Sign installation

WE NOW OFFER A COMBINED SUPPLY & ERECT SERVICE, THROUGH OUR SISTER COMPANY, MORELOCK INSTALLATIONS LIMITED (MIL)

  • All signs should be erected in accordance with the recommendations in the Traffic Signs Manual, Chapter 13.
  • Signs should only be installed by fully trained personnel of proven competence.
  • Signs on motorways and trunk roads should only be installed by operatives registered to Sector Scheme 9B.

  • DO NOT scuff or walk on the sign face.
  • It is advisable that posts should be positioned and concreted before the sign is secured, and only signs below 1 square metre per post should be assembled in advance and erected as a single unit.
  • Battens or strong packing should be placed in position at the foot of the posts to protect the signs from contact with the ground before being lifted into position.
  • Do not drag signs across battens or across the ground. Signs should be LIFTED at all times.
  • All packaging and slip sheeting should be removed and, if the sign has to be laid down, it should be face up and protected from contact with the ground.
  • Large signs should be lifted using webbed slings and not metal chains (HSE requirement). Care should be taken to ensure that no undue stress is placed on sign panels or stiffening members during the lifting operation.
  • Signs should be mounted so that the overhang beyond the post is the same on either side, this should be equal to 20% of the sign width when two posts are used. If ladders are used they should NOT be set against the sign face unless absolutely necessary. If they are, they must be properly padded and prevented from movement across the face.
  • In adverse wind conditions, careful judgement should be exercised before attempting to erect large sign plates (larger than approx 2 square metres) which may be liable to undue stress as a result of the conditions.
  • Use guide ropes to avoid wind or impact damage.

Butting clamps & post clips

Butting clamps MUST be used on all multi-panel signs. Like post-clips, they are essential to maintain the structural integrity of the sign - signs erected without butting clamps have been known to fall off their posts in high winds! Butting clamps must be fitted at the ends of each sign and also one between each set of posts.
